Those looking for a hands-on approach when it comes to selecting a Christmas tree this year can cut their own, with a permit, from designated areas on Crown land in Alberta.
A no-cost Personal Use Forest Products Permit (PUFPP) is required that allows up to three trees to be harvested.
The permit can be obtained online at alberta.ca.
The Province says that even within designated areas, some places are off-limits.
Also, harvesting trees in provincial parks and recreation areas is prohibited and carries a large fine.
Other rules apply. Trees must be less than 2.5 metres tall, and a digital or printed copy of the PUFPP must be carried at all times when harvesting and transporting Christmas trees. The re-sale of trees is not allowed.
