Dueling mediums battle for your psyche

You may have heard of dueling pianos; maybe you’ve even been to a bar that has had them — two pianists armed with two pianos, a lot of dancing and singing along to classics by the likes of Journey and Billy Joel.

You may have heard of dueling pianos; maybe you’ve even been to a bar that has had them — two pianists armed with two pianos, a lot of dancing and singing along to classics by the likes of Journey and Billy Joel.

But have you ever heard of dueling mediums?

This Sunday, July 13 two mediums will be “dueling” at Ducks on the Roof. Mediums are people who claim to be able to communicate with spirits of people who have passed.

The show begins at 1 p.m. and will feature Jenny Ogilvie from Calgary and Ross Spencer from Canberra, Australia.

“It will literally be like dueling pianos where we kind of work together and then separately,” said Ogilvie. “For instance, he will start a reading and then all of a sudden he’ll stop and I’ll take over the reading.”

Spencer described this type of event as seeing “two mediums demonstrating their own unique ability to communicate with spirits.”

Ogilvie explained that they don’t have an agenda for the event and that she does what the spirit wants her to do – this could include blind readings and object readings. She said it just depends because she believes everything happens for a reason.

Ogilvie said past events she has done have been successful and events at Ducks on the Roof have sold out on previous occasions.

Ogilvie and Spencer met in an advanced medium course at Arthur Findlay College in the U.K. while they were both studying oversees. Ogilvie said they really connected during their time in the U.K. and kept in contact after they had completed their studies.

Although Spencer has done dueling medium shows before, he said he has never been to Canada and he is excited for the trip.

“Be prepared to laugh and cry,” said Spencer. “People who have never experienced a medium performance will be amazed and others will have a most enjoyable experience.”

Spencer also invites those who might be a little more skeptical to come along. He said he thinks it’s great when critics come to a performance and give very little information.

“The joy I get from seeing the expression on their faces when I give evidence that they can take about their loved ones that have passed is indescribable,” said Spencer.

Tickets for the event are $35 and are available at Ducks on the Roof or at talkingtospirits.ca.
