With a week of voting already behind us, Cochrane is sitting pretty in the contest to be named World Fishing Network.com’s (WFN) Ultimate Fishing Town.
As of April 23, our little town along the banks of the Bow River is in second place in the western region with about 1,500 votes. We’re lagging behind The Pas, Man., who have more than 1,600.
Nationwide, Cochrane is in sixth position. Leading the pack is Ontario’s Port Colborne with about 17,500 votes.
The first round of voting will wrap up May 3 at 11:59 a.m. Finalists from each region will continue on to the second voting round, which will run from noon on May 3 through to 11:59 a.m. on May 24. So, keep up the voting Cochranites.
The town named WFN’s Ultimate Fishing Town will be on the receiving end of a cool $25,000. Donated to a local community organization, a government entity or charitable organization supporting local anglers, the money is meant to be spent within the spirit of the contest.
Dave Levisky, who along with wife Gaynor nominated Cochrane for the contest, said he’d like to see the money go towards the development of Mitford Park — adding on to the infrastructure initiated by the Kimmett family and the contributions from the Kraft Celebration Tour.
There are cash prizes available for the winners in each of the three regions: the eastern region, the western region and Ontario. In addition, four secondary cash prizes will be awarded to towns selected by an applicable representative. For instance, Shaw Cable will award a town that it services based on the amount of votes the fishing hot spot accumulates.
