In celebration of Canadian Library Month, the Cochrane Public Library (CPL) is launching their Automatic Item Renewal service this month, to help give their patrons a little more time to return their overdue books.

The new service will automatically renew any items owned by the CPL that do not have any holds on them. This will allow guests who take books, movies, and other materials that are available at the CPL.

When the item is renewed, patrons will receive a notification via email or text, informing them about the automatic renewal.

The CPL adds that the new service is designed with the community in mind. This will give patrons the convenience to not worry about their returns. With two automatic renewals, this gives patrons with physical or geographical barriers more time and fewer obstacles to service.

Through this new system, the CPL adds that this will promote fewer manual renewals, which will make the borrowing process seamless, and will encourage more residents to visit the library.

Director of the Cochrane Public Library, Monique Fiedler-Sills, said that they are thrilled to bring this service as part of their ongoing commitment to enhancing library access, while also promoting literacy in Cochrane.

“Automatic Item Renewal is not just about convenience; it’s about fostering a love for reading and learning without barriers,” Fiedler-Sills said. “Items borrowed from other libraries may not automatically renew, as each library needs to opt-in for this service.

“However, if you take it from our shelves, barring some special collections and no holds, an item will renew up to two times. This will be especially beneficial for those who encounter difficulties getting to the library, or families that borrow many items at a time.”

The CPL invites all residents to take advantage of this new service. More information on the new service can be found online by visiting www.cochranepubliclibrary.ca or by calling 403-932-4353.
