On Jan. 26, eight members of Cochrane Fire Services joined thousands of first responders and the public in St. Albert at the funeral service for Constable David Wynn.
Const. Wynn was killed in the line of duty Jan. 17 at a St. Albert casino, when he and his partner were confronting a man regarding a suspected stolen vehicle. His partner, Const. Derek Bond, was injured during the incident.
“Whether it is police, fire or EMS that fall in the line of duty, it is important to show your support,” said Captain Jory Jenson with Cochrane Fire Services. “I think it makes a statement when you see the sheer numbers marching behind the procession. It is a big family.”
Jenson explained that these ‘tri-services’ work together a lot, because many incidents require fire, police and EMS working together as one.
He said that as public servants, when something horrific like Const. Wynn losing his life, occurs, it feels like ‘it is necessary to go and stand behind him.’ At the regimental funeral, Jenson said people were standing on the sides of the street waving Canadian flags and showing their support. Officials said that over 7,000 people attended the funeral, and over 2,000 first responders.
“Even though it is a very tragic event, we were glad we were able to show our support and I think it is something that we need to continue to do is support our members across different services,” said Jenson.
