An annual affair to help new residents adjust to living in Cochrane is returning to the Cochrane Public Library with the Cochrane Immigrant Services Committee’s (CISC) Newcomers Welcome Event on Mar. 22.
The event will run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and will feature light snacks, a raffle, and networking opportunities. All newcomers are welcome to drop by and visit the family-friendly event for free.
Paul Singh, an ambassador for the CISC, explained that the group has host two newcomer events every year, in the spring and fall.
“We’ve been organizing this around late 2015 or 2016, and it’s been ongoing since then,” he said. “It’s a great way to welcome newcomers all across Canada or from the outside world to let them know about the services and resources available in town.”
From tax services, language services, and other information that will help residents will settle in, Singh said it is an ideal way to connect with the various programs that are offered in town.
“They can contact the right person or people for that stuff, and also service partner agencies like the FCSS, FRN, the Cochrane Public Library itself, and so many other great [things],” Singh said.
Singh said it’s always great to see the new faces in town show up to the event, adding that it’s akin to taking the first step of becoming a Cochranite.
“It’s always a very warm feeling to welcome people from different walks of life or from different parts of the world,” he said. “Just to encourage and motivate them that they’re all part of our community now.”
Singh said he would like to that all sponsors and partners of the event, and for the continued support from the community to bring events like these to the community.
“We’re all part of this community, and we really want to say thank you for that,” Singh said.
