The Cochrane Historical & Archival Preservation Society (CHAPS) has been selected as the Parade Marshal for the 56th Annual Cochrane Labour Day Parade, set to take place on Monday, September 2, 2024.
Established in 1999 by local residents and then-Mayor Lydia Graham, CHAPS is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The organization's mission is to identify, preserve, protect, and educate the public about historically significant properties and buildings in Cochrane.
This year’s parade is especially significant as it marks the inaugural Cochrane Discovery Days, a new event aimed at celebrating and honoring the history of the community. CHAPS's role as Parade Marshal underscores the importance of recognizing those who have dedicated themselves to preserving Cochrane’s rich heritage.
On August 5, CHAPS commemorated its 25-year milestone with a special event at the Cochrane Historical Museum, located at Cochrane Ranche. The celebration featured the opening of the Westerson Cabin and the unveiling of an exquisite carving by Widahl Woodcraft. The museum, originally Cochrane's hospital from 1909 to 1916, was rescued from demolition in 2014 by CHAPS and has since become a central hub for preserving and showcasing local history.
In addition to managing the museum, CHAPS is involved in archiving historic artifacts, placing descriptive plaques at significant buildings, and offering educational presentations about Cochrane’s past.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to join in the celebration of CHAPS and their contributions to preserving Cochrane’s heritage. The Labour Day Parade will kick off at 10:00 a.m. on September 2, with pre-parade entertainment starting at 9:00 a.m.
Further details about the parade route and additional activities will be announced in the coming week.
