The family of Logan Boulet have officially selected a winner of a national T-shirt design competition, and are encouraging Canadians to plan organ and tissue donation awareness events for the seventh annual Green Shirt Day on April 7.
The event honours the victims and families of the 2018 Humboldt Bus Crash that killed 16 people, including 21-year-old defenceman Logan Boulet.
Logan had previously shared his wishes to donate his organs and tissue upon his passing. Through this, he saved the lives of six people through the donations he made on April 7, 2018. In the week that followed, this sparked the Logan Boulet effect that inspired nearly 150,000 Canadians to register as donors.
Logan’s mother, Bernadine Boulet, said that this created discussion around a very important topic among Canadians about becoming donors.
“Logan’s legacy reminds us how important it is for Canadians to talk with their family about their organ and tissue donation wishes,” Boulet said. “It will be up to families to give consent.”
To kick off the campaign leading up to April 7, the Boulet family released the official winning shirt design from a national competition. The winning design shows Logan taking a slap shot, and was created by Geoffrey Kehrig, an artist who grew up in Humboldt Saskatchewan.
“After the bus crash, I purchased a Logan Boulet Humboldt Broncos jersey and I’ve proudly worn it while playing pick-up street hockey in my B.C. community,” Kehrig said “I’m inspired by Logan’s unselfish choices and his reverence and compassion for others.”
Logan told his parents that he planned to register as an organ and tissue donor. He was inspired to make this choice by his coach and mentor Ric Suggitt, who died in 2017. Through this, Suggitt saved six lives.
Green Shirt Day aims to inspire 100,000 Canadians to register their decision about organ and tissue donation, and to talk to four more people each. The Boulet family, Canada Transplant Association, Canada Blood Services, Canada’s organ and tissue donation community, and the Kidney foundation of Canada are all urging Canadians to champion this cause.
