Today there was a bill tabled to fire the Elections Commissioner, who is currently investigating the UCP leadership race.
This can only be described as political interference in the investigation, and an affront to democracy.
Peter Guthrie was the first from the UCP to break rank, and declare he would not support Bill 207, which was tabled by his UCP colleague. He did that because it was the right thing to do for Albertans. We may not always agree, but I appreciate that he took action.
I ask him today to do it again.
Do the right thing for Albertans, do the right thing for democracy. Stand up again today and speak out against this bill. Stand up for all Albertans, and against political interference in these investigations.
Protect the integrity of our political system. Protect the integrity of his party even, and call on the UCP today to abandon this legislation.
I call on Peter Guthrie to indicate he will not support this bill.
If they refuse to back away from this outright attack on democracy, he should do the right thing, and step away from the UCP Caucus and sit as an independent, refusing to support this law.
He did the right thing with Bill 207, he should do it here too, for all Albertans.
