Trail closure until further notice following bear altercation

A bear caused minor injuries to a person on a trail near Canmore on Saturday.

KANANASKIS COUNTRY – A bear encounter resulting in minor injuries has forced the closure of a popular trail near Canmore.

Lady Macdonald Trail in Kananaskis Country is shut down until further notice after the incident on Saturday (July 22).

“Area closed due to a surprise encounter with a black bear that resulted in human contact and minor injuries,” said a report by Alberta Environment and Parks.

The report did not specify the type of injuries or how many people were involved.

Nearby trails are under a bear warning until further notice, including the Horseshoe Loop and Montane Trail, Cougar Creek Trail, Grotto Mountain Trail, G8 trail, Meander trail and Johnny’s Trail.

To help prevent a surprise bear encounter, Alberta Environment and Parks recommends:

  • Make plenty of noise and travel in groups.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for bears and their signs.
  • Keep your pet on a leash.
  • Carry bear spray. Make sure it’s easily accessible, and know how to use bear spray.
