ALBERTA— In an attempt to be readily prepared for the potential surge of COVID-19 cases in the province, Alberta Health Services has combined all maternity services in the Calgary Zone.

Alberta's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Deena Hinshaw warned the public a spike in COVID-19 cases is yet to come, and Alberta Health Services has begun taking precautions and planning for the peak of the virus.

Plenty of space and additional resources have been freed up at hospitals for those who will require a higher level of care due to COVID-19 and frontline workers will also be deployed to areas with the greatest need.

On Tuesday (April 21), all inpatient obstetrical and neonatal care delivered at the South Health Campus will be sent to either the Foothills Medical Centre, Rockyview General Hospital or the Peter Lougheed Centre, while maternity services provided by High River Hospital will be directed to Rockyview General Hospital said Alberta Health Services via a media release.

Both High River Hospital and South Health Campus will continue with women's health outpatient clinics.

Obstetricians, family physicians, midwives or Primary Care Networks with patients expected to deliver at South Health Campus or High River Hospital on or after April 21 will be contacted to make alternative arrangements.

During the pandemic, full services will continue to be provided by physicians, midwives and hospital staff to ensure birth plans are followed out.
