Canmore opens temporary donation location to support Jasper wildfire evacuees

"We had several people show up who were camping with the evacuation happened, or were just unable to get home from work to grab stuff before they left, etc, so had nothing, and were in tears over the generosity of Canmorites."

A donation drop-off location has been secured in Canmore to help support evacuees of the devastating wildfires that roared through the Jasper townsite, leaving a path of destruction and incineration across much of the national park community.

Donations of clothes and other personal items can be dropped off at 101B-56 Lincoln Park and community organizers say the donation centre will be operating from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for at least the next two weeks.

"We had several people show up who were camping with the evacuation happened, or were just unable to get home from work to grab stuff before they left, etc, so had nothing, and were in tears over the generosity of Canmorites," said Tracy A. Little, who is behind getting the temporary donation centre off the ground.

Donations being sought include seasonal clothing in good condition, pet food, toiletries, baby toys and toys for children under six years of age, as well as gift certificates for grocery stores, Shoppers Drug Mart and gas stations.

The Banff Canmore Foundation has also started a relief fund for people forced to flee their homes in Jasper.

"From one mountain community to another, Bow Valley stands in support of Jasper through this devastating loss," states the Bow Valley organization.

The Funds raised through this fund will support response and recovery in Jasper through BCF partners and collaborators working on the ground, particularly Jasper Community Team Society.
