MONCTON, N.B. — The RCMP in eastern New Brunswick say one person is dead following a home invasion that prompted the police to issue a provincewide emergency alert early Thursday.
The Mounties say that at 5:50 a.m., officers were dispatched to a residence in Berry Mills, where three people had forced their way in and confronted a man and a woman in their thirties. Investigators say there was a fight that led to the death of an unidentified man.
By the time officers arrived at the scene, two suspects had already fled in a black, 2018 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup.
A Ready Alert bulletin was transmitted to radios, TVs and cellphones across the province at 7:30 a.m., warning residents that two armed men with "dangerous intent" were driving in a pickup truck somewhere west of Moncton.
As the investigation continued in Berry Hill, the RCMP withdrew the alert around 2 p.m., saying that a man police had identified earlier was no longer a suspect and public safety was not at risk because the home invasion was a "targeted incident."
The Mounties provided few other details Thursday, except to say they were still searching for the black Dodge and a light-coloured Ford F-150 pickup.
"We are looking to speak with anyone who was travelling in the Berry Mills area during the early morning hours of (Thursday),” RCMP Cpl. Hans Ouellette said in a statement. "If you have dashcam or other video footage from the area at the time of the incident, please call the police."
