Two killed in double crash north of Edmonton: RCMP

Two people are dead after their truck was in two collisions in Sturgeon County Wednesday evening.

Mounties said Thursday morning they received a report of a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 44 and Township 554 in Sturgeon County at 7:12 p.m. Wednesday.

“Moments after the first collision, there was a second collision at the same location,” Cpl. Troy Savinkoff wrote in an emailed news release. “Upon arrival, emergency responders tended to multiple victims.”

The 65-year-old driver and 70-year-old passenger of a pickup, both residents of Westlock, were declared dead at the scene.

“Initial investigation indicates that a van being driven by a 17-year-old female was crossing Highway 44 from Township Road 544 when it was struck by the oncoming pickup,” Savinkoff continued. “The initial collision caused the van to go into the nearby ditch and the pickup remained on the highway.

Shortly after, the pickup still containing the driver and passenger was struck by an oncoming semi-tractor trailer.

The drivers of the van and the semi were treated at the scene by paramedics and are expected to recover. Police continue to investigate and offered their deepest condolences to those affected.
