Popular Grassi Lakes trails in Canmore, climbing area closed for construction

CANMORE – The popular Grassi Lakes trails, day use area and climbing area will be closed until further notice as crews remove an old communication line.

“Due to potential overhead hazards and the presence of operational equipment, the designated project area will be unsafe while work is in progress,” states an advisory from Alberta Parks.

The closure, which began Monday (Sept. 16), also effects the overflow parking lot as well as bike trails, the Reclaimer and Riders of Rohan.

Earlier in the summer, the trail saw multiple temporary closures for erosion mitigation. The work was to re-establish drainage ditches, up-size culverts and repair the trail surface.

The nearby Ha Ling trail and climbing routes closed on Sept. 3 for rockfall mitigation work and is set to reopen Oct. 15.

In 2022, Grassi Lakes was closed for the entire summer to undergo upgrades for the trails, parking and public transit. The project also included Goat Creek day-use area and cost more than $4 million.
