Kayaker drowns in Athabasca River near Hinton

Hinton RCMP are investigating the drowning of a 49-year-old kayaker in the Athabasca River near Hinton on Saturday (Sept. 28).

Hinton RCMP and members of the Yellowhead Fire Department said they responded to a report of a male in medical distress at about 11:55 p.m. Sept. 28 after he capsized his kayak.

Despite his wife attempting to perform first aid, the Hinton man was pronounced deceased at the scene, police said.

According to a police investigation, the male had been wearing a life jacket and was attempting to recover an abandoned canoe, and unseasonably high water volumes are suspected to be a key factor in his death.

“Members of the Hinton RCMP send their deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” police stated in a news release.

The RCMP reminded the public to prioritize safety while engaging in activity on or near the Athabasca River.
