Innisfail RCMP seize drugs and guns during assault probe

RED DEER COUNTY –  While responding to a complaint of assault, Innisfail RCMP have arrested a Red Deer County man and he’s now also facing drug and weapons charges.

RCMP  Cpl. Troy Savinkoff said on Nov. 9 Innisfail RCMP were called to a rural property west of Dickson, 33 kilometres west of Innisfail, to investigate an assault complaint.

While at the property, RCMP officers developed grounds to believe the suspect was also in possession of drugs and illegal weapons, said Savinkoff.

He said RCMP officers obtained a search warrant for the property.

Savinkoff said the search of the property resulted in the seizure of the following:

• suspected cocaine;

• suspected fentanyl;

• suspected methamphetamine;

• suspected GHB;

• drug trafficking paraphernalia;

• .22 calibre handgun;

• sawed-off shotgun (prohibited firearm);

• three long-barrel rifles;

• three shotguns; and

• hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

He said Michael Stephanson, 39, a resident of Red Deer County, has been charged with the following offences:

• assault;

• possession for the purpose of trafficking;

• unauthorized possession of firearms;

• possession of firearms without holding licence;

• possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose.

Stephanson was taken before a justice of the peace and released with his next court date set for Nov. 28 at the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer.
